At Oakland American Academy (Kiddies Castle Campus), we recognize that providing our students with a comprehensive education is essential for their success in today’s dynamic global economy. Our curriculum aims to help students develop critical skills necessary for their lifelong success. We use challenging and research-based curricula that exceed parent expectations and consistently meet the academic standards set by the state.
Our approach to education is well-rounded, providing our students with a balanced curriculum that includes not only core subjects but also extracurricular activities such as technology, computer science, foreign languages, music, art, and character development. We believe that a broad education is critical to developing well-rounded students who are prepared for success in the real world.
Math
We help students develop critical thinking and mathematical skills from a young age. Beginning in kindergarten, we infuse our curriculum with number sense, algebraic operations, measurement, data analysis, mathematical thinking, and geometry.
Our program uses a research-based approach to math education, and we have chosen a curriculum that focuses on developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Our students learn not only how to solve math problems but also how to apply their knowledge in real-world situations.
Science
Our science program is thorough and challenging at all grade levels. Our curriculum includes studies in earth science, physical science, and life science, emphasizing the use of the scientific method to understand, explain, and design inquiries in different scientific fields.
Our students are encouraged to apply their knowledge in real-world situations through our robotics club, science Olympiad team, and participation in regional science fairs. These opportunities allow our students to see firsthand the relevance of science in their daily lives and provide them with a chance to showcase their knowledge and skills.
Language Arts
We recognize that effective communication skills are essential for our student’s success in academics and life beyond the classroom. Our language arts curriculum encompasses all the skills needed to help our students become effective communicators and lifelong learners.
Our program emphasizes decoding, comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn several genres: poetry, plays, autobiographies, realistic fiction, non-fiction, biographies, historical fiction, folktales, and many more. Through this exposure, students learn to appreciate and analyze different types of literature, developing critical thinking skills and a love of reading.
Social Studies
Our social studies program strives to create global thinkers in the 21st century. Our curriculum explores historical and contemporary events, world and U.S. history, geography, governments, and economics.
Our students learn about the influence of past cultures on current events and culture, gaining a deeper understanding of how the world works. They study various cultures and histories from around the globe and within the United States, exploring how diverse cultures have shaped our country into the nation that it is today.
Art
Our art program is structured around the fourteen elements and principles of art and design, allowing students to develop their artistic skills and creativity in a structured and meaningful way.
Our students engage in hands-on projects that reinforce core concepts in various media and techniques, encouraging mastery and retention of these skills. The art program provides a real-world connection between math, language arts, science, social studies, and the arts, reinforcing other curriculum areas and helping students see the relationships between different subjects.
Music
Our music program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded education in the arts. Our experienced teachers use various teaching methods to engage students in meaningful learning experiences, helping them develop a lifelong appreciation and understanding of music.
Most of our students attend music classes twice a week, allowing them to develop their musical skills and knowledge. Beginning in grade three, students can learn how to play either the guitar or piano, with regular opportunities to perform in semester recitals that demonstrate their developing skills to the broader community.
Technology, Computer Science, and Engineering
Technology, computer science, and engineering are integral to modern education. Our experienced teachers use a variety of software applications to provide instruction in core subjects while emphasizing applied digital skills, responsible digital citizenship, and design thinking.
Our students have numerous opportunities to participate in internet research projects and related activities, helping them develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of technology’s role in today’s society. We encourage our students to see themselves as creators of technology rather than passive consumers.
Our K-5 students take a technology course where they learn practical tech skills, including keyboarding, computer applications with Google and Microsoft products, coding, and robotics. Our middle school students take academic courses in computer science and engineering. In the introductory period, our 6th graders are familiarized with the basics of both areas of study. Our 7th and 8th graders then choose a track based on their interests, with year-long classes focused on computer science or engineering.
Our computer science classes teach multiple programming languages, robotics, web and game design, and advanced topics such as wearable computing and artificial intelligence. In our engineering courses, students explore mechatronics, invention, innovation, and technological systems. Through our program, we aim to create lifelong learners who are aware of the broader impacts of technology on society and who will be excited to continue their studies in a STEM/CS field of their choosing.
Physical Education
A healthy body is the foundation of a healthy mind. Thus, we prioritize physical education as a central part of our curriculum. All our students participate in PE every week from kindergarten to high school.
Our PE program is designed to be fun, engaging, and inclusive. Every student can benefit from physical activity, regardless of their skill level or ability. Our students play games requiring extensive and small motor functions, building cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength.
In addition to physical fitness, our PE program emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship. Our students learn the traditional rules of several sports, including basketball, soccer, and volleyball. They are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, such as team sports or individual fitness challenges, to develop their skills further and build a sense of community.
Foreign Language
Our comprehensive foreign language program allows students in all grade levels to expand their language skills and enhance their logical abilities. Our program offers the choice between two languages: Russian and Mandarin. Our experienced instructors, fluent speakers of the languages, provide students with high-quality instruction that emphasizes oral and written language skills. Our students learn the basics of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure and are encouraged to practice their skills in a supportive and engaging environment. In addition to language instruction, our program explores the rich cultural heritage of the countries where the languages are spoken.
Special Education (SPED)
Our Special Education (SPED) program fully complies with the requirements of Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We strive to provide every student with disabilities with the support and services they need to succeed.
Our SPED program is designed to support the inclusion of SPED students in our full academic program. Our special education teachers and support staff provide direct services, consultation, and support to ensure every student with disabilities can access the general education curriculum.
We recognize that every student has unique needs and abilities, and we work closely with families and professionals to develop individualized education plans (IEPs) that address the specific needs of each student. Our SPED program includes various support services, including specialized instruction, assistive technology, and accommodations to help students succeed in the general education classroom.
Homework
Students are given daily homework assignments that vary in amount depending on their grade level. Homework reinforces and expands upon the lessons learned in class while encouraging students to develop a strong work ethic and improve their project completion skills. By completing homework assignments regularly, students learn how to manage their time effectively, develop independent learning strategies, and take responsibility for their academic progress.
